Safari Zoo Camp is a fun and interactive program that allows children, teens and adults to get directly in touch with nature!

Established in 1995 at Jungle Cat World Wildlife Park, this one-of-a-kind residential camp offers hands-on experiences with a variety of animals: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and exotic insects. This develops an intimate comprehension of the Earth's fragile living environment under the safe guidance of knowledgeable peers and professionals.

Safari Zoo Camp is nestled in a quaint spruce forest adjacent to Jungle Cat World, a wildlife park located on 15 picturesque acres in the Municipality of Clarington in historical Orono, just 45 minutes east of Toronto.

The zoo was established in 1983 and first accredited in 1989 by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). This non-profit organization was established to promote the welfare of animals and encourage the advancement and improvement of education, conservation and science. Certification is granted once a thorough inspection is made of the facility examining all facets of the institution, such as animal health, public safety and active conservation/education programs.

Most of the mammals and birds are housed in outdoor enclosures, while the reptiles, amphibians, arachnids and exotic insects are kept in a secure, temperature-controlled room.

The Education Centre is reserved for presentations, educational activities, indoor crafts and games. Next door is the Dining Hall where kids eat their breakfast and snacks.

Campers sleep in rustic, but comfortable, bunkhouses. Approximately 12 children reside in each with 2 staff members that live in a seperate room. The washroom/showers are located nearby. All the buildings meet fire and safety regulations. To the south is the small spruce forest with trails that lead to the large Siberian tiger and Gray wolf habitats. The focal point is the big campfire area, where we gather in the evening to talk and laugh, listening to both campers and staff play the guitar.

For the utmost safety, Safari Zoo Camp is situated outside the zoo's perimeter fence. However, many of the animals, particularly the tigers and wolves, can be seen up-close from the campgrounds. Safari Zoo Camp is also kept seperate from the general public that visit the park daily. Only campers, councellors, zoo staff and specially permitted guests are allowed on Safari Zoo Camp grounds.

Eating responsibly

What we eat has a huge influence on the plants, animals and people around us. It is one of the most influential forces that shapes society and the environment. Realizing this, our menu is designed to be nutritious yet socially and environmentally responsible:

  • Vegetarian meals are available upon request.

  • Though meat is offered daily, beef is available only once each week. Beef production requires a large amount of resources, such as water, fossil fuels and land. Roughly one-fifth of the world's land is used for grazing. Livestock waste has been known to pollute rivers, lakes and drinking water.

  • One study estimated that a basic North American meal travels 2,400 km from the field to our table. All this transportation releases pollutants and greenhouse gases. Our snack food and meals for our field trips are purchased locally, only a few kilometers away. Not only does this support the local economy, but reduces the waste, energy and materials required to move food over great distances. (Our thanks to "Freds Fruit Market" and "The Village Bake Shop" in Orono!)

  • Over 400 billion cups of coffee are drank each year around the world. Coffee production is one of the leading causes of rainforest destruction and one of the most heavily chemically sprayed food crops. The staff and adult campers enjoy only Organic/Fair Trade coffee. (Our thanks to "The Coffee Table" in Bowmanville!)
  • By striving for ecological harmony, we are inadvertently securing our own health and welfare. Let's protect our soil, water and air from contamination- let's eat smart!

While at the zoo, all lunches and suppers are eaten at the Dutch Oven Restaurant adjacent to the park. Follow the link to see the menu>>> MENU

Please note: Though we can't accomodate all special dietary needs, we do our best to do so. Please ask us before registering.
